So, while the Boxer Hockey book is on the back burner due to monetary issues and deals gone awry, I'll be producing a full 22-page Diesel comic book from start to finish for one of my college courses next quarter.
For the course, I'll be producing it all digitally in Black & White like Spot Blacks example up top. But I want to develop an inking style that could work if I wanted to color it later, so I made these tests.

In the sketch-dump, I have a HB vs. Deadpool pic from a Drawfag thread on 4chan, some ...cute hamsters, and a couple heads and things from some minor Diesel characters, as well as a size chart for all the main protagonists.

I sketched this out in art history today and decided to throw some colors on and share it. I thought dopey tom-boy 8 year old Diesel was too adorable not to post. That's Capp on the left who might not be recognizable because she hadn't cut and died her hair at this age. It's kind of nice though cause you can actually tell she's supposed to be Hispanic. And then there's Phil who has shown up in a couple of the sketch-dumps.

The stand-out of the picture though, is definitely prototype wind-up Rickets at the bottom.

Anyway, figuring out what your characters looked like as kids is always fun. I've gotta post some picture of fat little Rittz at one point.

The picture on the top left is Diesel's final "work" outfit, sans the shoes. I figured she should wear something on her feet, but in the end I think being barefoot just suits her better.

There's a couple good pictures of Capp in there too, but it's pretty obvious I haven't been working on her as much.

I hesitated to put the towel sketch up at all, being that it kinda pushes that line. I was drawing it to practice anatomy and I just liked it so much that I didnt want to put clothes on it, and I liked her face so much, I was just said screw it. I'll have Rickets trying to cover her up. I'm still a bit iffy on it. Just don't get used to me posting stuff that risque.

Thanks to Matt Doering for bringing this to my attention. It's amazing what a little selective value boost can do. The old set is on the left and the new one on the right. The difference is definitely subtle, but you can see the colors popping out a bit more from each other on the right.

Matt's one of the more talented people in the animation program with me at SCAD. I don't know if he has a website, but if you do Matt, let me know and I'll give you a link.

Just some sketchbook entries as I try and refine that engine-riding girl. Now you might be thinking, "My, that's some slutty girl you've got there." And you'd be kind of right. So many internet artists draw nothing but busty, minxes in compromising poses all day, and more power to them I guess. I don't want to be defined by such drawings though. I've never had a fan-service character before, and I'd really like to try my hand at creating an appealing one.

Been quite a while since I put anything up here, but I haven't done anything in a month except Boxer Hockey. So here's two pieces of lineart for you. The first is a new comic idea I'm working on about a girl rides around a giant flying engine block. It gives me the opportunity to be a little more creative in my creature and character design.

The next is just the Boxer Hockey girls in their game garb. Done, as always, to practice drawing hips and boobs.

This is the cover for the flat-book I have to produce for Senior Concept. The monitor theme carries throughout the whole book, and yes. The monitor is super stupid and tall. This would probably also be the cover for the slipsleeve if I put it in a DVD case.

Senior Film art direction shot

This is an art direction shot for my senior film. That is to say, a shot that details the look of the final finished film.

I built the office in Maya 2008 for simple blocking and composition, painted over it in Photoshop CS3 to give it the classic cartoon feel, and then drew the monkeys over the BG in Photoshop as well. There's not going to be any shading on the monkeys to save production time for animation, but there will be a gradient applied to them in After Effects in post-production.

Hopefully this will explain why it's going to take 2 quarters at school to do a 1:10 minute short.

So one of my classes this quarter is Concept for Senior Animation where we develop an idea for our final senior film. These are just a couple ideas I've thrown up for the class. If you have any feedback or favor one in particular, let me know in the comments. I have to pick one by the end of the weekend.
1.) An elderly monkey arrives at his desk in the morning and turns on his computer, to find it unresponsive. Several other monkeys begin to crowd around, all trying to solve the problem to no avail. Finally, one monkey suggests that they’re all just a bunch of monkeys and shouldn’t be in an office to begin with and they all disband. Moments later a human arrives at the desk in the same fashion only to find monkey poop smeared on his screen. 

2.) Three dinosaur scientists in a cave have learned of the coming of a comet that will exterminate their species. They concoct idea after idea to somehow survive the coming comet, but nothing seems to be a foolproof plan. They decide they need the help of another dinosaur so they leave the cave only to discover the comet has long since crashed, leaving them intact. Terrified of the new world outside they crawl back inside their cave once more.  

3.)Two angels sitting around bored on a cloud decide to have some fun, spitting spitballs down on an unfortunate man below on earth. Through escalating attempts to escape the mysterious downpour, the man inadvertently slips on a spit puddle and plummets to his doom, only to appear in heaven immediately behind the angels where he gives them a taste of their own medicine.

4.) Hapless idiot Rittz teaches the audience various life lessons through a series of short segments of moral-themed events. Sequences include “Don’t count your eggs before they hatch” Wherein Rittz counts some eggs and then gets eaten by a dinosaur, and “You can’t have your cake and eat it too”, where Rittz regrets having an erotic session with a piece of cake only regret it being gone immediately after. 

5.) Rickets is a robot that has fallen off the truck on the day of his delivery. He activates in the forest and with no commands given to him he associates with the first creature he comes across, which happens to be a squirrel. A fight between him and the squirrel breaks out over an acorn which leads to the destruction of the squirrel’s tree. Rickets then reluctantly finds purpose as a replacement residence for the Squirell to live in.

I wanted to try some new things with simplifying the coloring on this one, since ultimately, I'd like the Boxer Hockey book to be in full color, but I need to come up with a way to get it done quickly enough to be worthwhile. This time it still took about 10+ hours from start to finish, which is still a bit too much considering there's only 1 character per frame. I'll continue experimenting with the next few strips before the online run of Boxer Hockey comes to a finish. :(

Well I just finished the last background for that project I'm not allowed to talk to anyone about...
Which is a huge bummer because it's definitely the best thing I've ever digitally painted, hands down.... Here's a little insert detail shot, just view it knowing it's only about 1/10th of the final piece. I can't wait till I can show people these things. Original layout lineart by Sanford Green.

Nowadays

Things keeping me busy are many these days. Most recently of interest, Jay Axer contacted me the other day and offered me a little publishing deal with a company he's working with now. Which is great, and I'd love to be able to produce Boxer Hockey in print for a living... but I'd also like to use all this animation education I'm paying so much for. I'd actually have to be on a printing schedule which could be hell while I'm still at school. More importantly, as I could not produce both at the same time, it would basically mean an end to the Boxer Hockey webcomic as we know it. I don't know, just something heavy I've got to think about.

Those of you who are not my teacher may not find the following particularly interesting, but it's part of my grade in this class to post regular updates on the progress of my short film, so there you go.

I've recorded all the voices for my film now and got a rough track put together, so it's time to start timing out the animation. Which I'm doing today. I've also got several of my backgrounds done and even a few complete shots. Isn't that delightful?

I am slightly hindered by the fact that there's still a freakin hold on my account for some reason, making it impossible for me to check out/use a cintiq pen... but then I guess it would be asking too much for everything to run smoothly around here, wouldn't it.

Ext: Building. "Rust Co."

Dialogue: Gentlemen, thank you all for coming today.

Interior: Board room.

Officiator: We are all greived at the recent passing of our beloved president. However It is time to pick up the peices and move on. President gave left explicit instructions on what to do after his passing, including the name of his appointed successor.

Officiator: Please help me now in welcoming our new president, Rusty.

You know, it occurs to me as I peruse about the blogs of fellow students, that I could be taking my time and actually giving some kind of style or pizazz to these assignments...

Perhaps it's silly, but it never even crossed my mind to try and make these things look presentable.

In retrospect, that probably would have been a good idea... y'know.. making these things not look like balls in a blender.

Why is it that everything I make in Flash is so damn awkward looking. And I mean like, Gay Racist Cowboy Convention awkward.

Poor Rittz suffers the worst of blows, however. His first line of dialogue and he has all the grace and fluidity of a South Park character...

And if you weren't bored enough already today, why not... here's a horribly animated bouncing ball.

Alright, you can go put your socks back on, because I know that last video has knocked them right off. This blog is like a riveting car chase and an explosion all in one.

This is the first thing I've ever animated in flash. Isn't it absolutely awful? Why, looking at this, you'd think I wouldn't know the first thing about animating in Flash! HAHAHA! ISN'T THAT HILARIOUS!?

The assignment for class was to make this horrible Gary Grossman-looking clown look like he's jumping. Well, I suppose he looks like he's jumping... albeit through some horrible goopy fluid of some sort.

So I have been charged to show some examples of my favorite type of animation for whatever reason. I'm not sure if it's to show the type of style I plan to employ or what, so I'm gonna go halfway. First off is Venture Bros. On top of being funny, it's a well written show with a continuous storyline and good art. On American TV. I know. The animation is typically very limited can move when needed. It's also got totally ace character design which is really important to me.

Secondly, is the Gorillaz music videos. I don't need to tell anyone why this is some of my favorite animation. You'd have to be blind.

Also, I like Anime. Durh. So why not. Here's the intro to the most entertaining anime to come out of japan in years:
